Fremantle – the port city

Fremantle is a port city with a long maritime history. It is an attractive location with two aquatic boundaries – the Swan River and the Indian Ocean.

The arrival of Italian and Greek migrants in the late 1800s was a contributing factor to the establishment of the local fishing industry. The harbour is now a vital channel for imports, exports and cruise ships.

Affectionately known as Freo by the locals, it is also home to the Aussie Rules football team, the Fremantle Dockers whose logo is fittingly an anchor.

Fremantle markets

Walking tour

It’s easy to wander around and absorb its coastal vibe and arty character. Fremantle weekend markets are colourful with pop-up stalls selling local handicrafts, trinkets and fresh produce. There’s a great buzz at the market entrance which is often used by buskers or musicians. The popular Sail and Anchor pub is located on the corner.

If you’re not into the hustle and bustle of the markets, head up a bit further to the famous Cappuchino Strip for coffee or a meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants. Nearby is the Notre Dame University, an inner city campus, located across a number of streets. You can stroll around and admire the beautiful heritage buildings. Walking across Marine Terrace will bring you to the Esplanade which is edged with Norfolk pines, a ferris wheel and a skate park. This is a popular venue for music and food festivals so if you happen to visit at one of those times, it’s an added bonus.

Bathers Beach

Fishing Boat Harbour

The Fishing Boat Harbour has plenty of eateries with water views. Kailis and Ciccerello’s are famous for their Fish and Chips, and the seafood platter is good value. The seagulls do swarm in if you start feeding them! So pay attention to the sign that says, Do not feed the seagulls or they will S.O.Y.

Bathers Beach House is one of the few restaurants permitted to serve alcohol on the beach. Relax in a lounge chair with a glass of wine while watching a spectacular sunset. The Little Creatures Brewery is popular for its inhouse-brewed beer and pizzas. You can walk along the beach or climb up to the Round House for awesome ocean views. Cruise ships dock at the passenger terminal, while further at sea are container ships waiting to load or unload cargo.

– Fremantle Art Centre – it runs a number of special events and talks

Fremantle Prison – built by convicts in the early 1900s. Daytime Tours are available, or Torchlight Tours at night, but not for the faint-hearted.
